Dog training is simple but not necessarily easy. Dogs are as diversified in their temperament and personality as humans and present different challenges to a dog trainer. Some breeds are much easier to train than others; some dogs are better athletes than others but no dog is beyond training. Some dogs respond quickly to a new command and not all dogs can do everything to the same degree. As a good dog trainer you must understands there are limitations imposed by a dogs breed and temperament and take that into consideration.

As a trainer, consider what it is you’re training for and then pick a relevant breed and an individual with natural talent for what it is you want to achieve. There are temperament tests that can determine a personality type: alpha, dominant, outgoing and reserved. For example, if you want to train a hunting dog make sure he isn’t sound sensitive.

The optimum age for testing for various temperament and traits is 49 days. The testing must be done by stranger to the pups; someone who has an understanding about interpreting the tests and can convey the significance of a response to distinct stimuli. Even an adult dog can be tested. The tests are applied with modifications.

If you are looking for a therapy dog prospect you will want to stay away from an alpha dog or even one inclined to dominance. And let me make it very clear here; an alpha dog and a dominant dog can be the same individual but not all dominant dogs are alphas. Alphas are very difficult to live with and I strongly urge that you avoid attempting to train an alpha unless you thoroughly understand the significance of what that means. Alphas make very poor pets for the average person.

In this age of instant information there are many resources available to help you learn how to teach your dog better behavior. It is possible to watch DVD’s about dog training, find outstanding books about specific dog behaviors and problems and many dog trainers will answer questions posted to their website.

There is no “magic button” to remove unwanted behavior done by your dog. You should research dog training schools and instructors in your area. If this isn’t possible, get a good DVD that shows you clearly how to proceed from one step to the next. Familiarize yourself with the procedure, practice the maneuvers and start training.

You will need a clear goal, patience, a strong desire to achieve what you want and the intuition to know if something you are trying to achieve makes sense. You need to be gentle and consistent in your training techniques. You also need to be absolutely certain that you are a good trainer. Realize that the majority of problems that dogs have is because their trainer is not doing a good job.

When you first decided to get a puppy, you probably weren’t aware of all the responsibilities that went along with being a dog owner. There are a lot of things that need to be done on a daily basis to take care of a dog and on top of all of that they can be very expensive.

As your dog grows as a member of your family you begin to care about them as if they were your own flesh and blood. This also means that you also worry about your pet. You worry about leaving them alone outside because they can’t comprehend that it can be dangerous to leave the property.

The fact that you can not explain the dangers of leaving the backyard to your pet forces you to keep them leashed when they are outside and unsupervised. Being leased up in the backyard makes it very hard for your pet to run and get the proper exercise that they desperately need.

It would truly be a wonderful thing if you could somehow explain to your pet that they need to stay in the backyard. You could then let them roam freely. They could run and play and be happy. They could be left alone, without supervision and without any need to worry. If this sounds good to you I may have the answer to your problem.

If this is something that you find appealing, then you are in luck. Have you ever hear of wireless dog fences. Essentially, this is a radio controlled device that prevents your pet from leaving a certain radius. For example, you can set a wireless dog fence to have a radius of 50 yards. Your dog will be allowed to roam 50 yards in any direction from where ever you choose.

Wireless dog fences come with two separate parts, the transmitter and a special collar. The way it works is, the transmitter emits a signal that is received by the special dog collar. If the dog collar stop receiving the signal it puts out a correctional shock. This may sound drastic but I assure you this is in no way painful for your pet.

The “shock” is only to remind your dog that they have passed to far away from home. Over time your dog will learn the boundaries of your property and automatically stay within them. This is one of the easiest and most effective way to train your dog.

Wireless dog fences are very easily set up. Simply, choose a place in your home where you’d like to place the transmitter, set it to the distance you’d like your pet to be able to roam and that’s it. Your dog will be able to roam free outside with little to no supervision.

Having a dog is such a privilege that I think we must all take time to know as much as possible. I have lately come across so many people that really love their dogs but, they still make so many mistakes out of ignorance. I have to admit, to my shame, that I can probably still count under those. The only consolation is that I’m really trying and hopefully I will improve. Visit our site and have a look.

No amount of training will solve the problem of a dog that is just not right for your lifestyle. You can get all the help with dog training possible and it will not solve your problem. In a previous article I Have touched on the different kinds of breeds there is and I have taken a very brief look at some of their general characteristics. If you are in any doubt I really recommend a good dog training e-book such as SitStayFetch where you will get all the information you need.

The next step towards deciding which bread is right for you is to have a look at your lifestyle. Dogs need company, exercise and food, but not all breeds need it in the same way and you have to keep that in mind when choosing a dog.

The basics of your lifestyle that you need to consider are:

1. Your daily schedule and commitments:

How much time will you be able to spend with your dog? A puppy needs a lot of attention and if you do not have the time, it is just not going to work. If you are out of the house most of the time, now might not be the right time to get a puppy.

2. What you do for fun and leisure:

It is most important to take into account if a dog can be included in what you do for fun. If you hate exercise, it is best to stay away from the breeds that are very active. On the other hand if you are the active kind that wants to go on long walks with your dog, you cannot get a tiny dog that will not be up to it. You also have to take into consideration whether the places you love to go will be suitable for a dog.

3. Your living quarters

The size of your living quarters is very important. You cannot keep a large dog in a tiny apartment. Even a small dog can only be kept in a small apartment if you can take him for exercise on a regular basis. The dog’s proneness to barking can also be a problem in a small space. This is a very important thing to keep in mind.

4. How often and how do you travel?

How often do you travel? Keep in mind that all breeds do not handle kenneling good. On the other hand, if your dog is welcome in the places you go to, it is much less of a problem. No dog handles being left alone often very good and it is almost certain that if you have to be away too often that your dog will develop behavior problems.

5. Your financial situation:

If money is tight, avoid high-maintenance dogs such as those with pushed-in noses or skin flaps as they are naturally prone to health problems.

6. Your lifestyle situation:

Single people – you’ll need to take time to socialize your dog.

Couples – Do you both work? Will someone always be able to be home in time to feed puppy?

Families with children younger that five – Can you still handle a puppy?

Families with children older than five – The kids can help, get a dog that loves lots of activity.

Retired people - This is an ideal time for a puppy. Just keep in mind that a puppy can be as demanding as a baby. Also keep your retirement plans in mind when choosing a breed.

Households with other pets – Another dog can help with the training, but if the dog you already have is a little nutty, you may want puppy to get a little training before bringing him home.

7. When to consider an older dog – If you decide on an older dog just make sure you get a dog that has matured a bit and does not act like an over sized puppy!

As you can see, choosing a dog needs a lot of thought and you cannot simply settle on the first cute puppy that steals your heart.

In a nutshell, this is what you need to think about:

Think of the breed’s personality and what will suit you best

Take an honest look at yourself and get a breed who can share in your interests

Choose a breed that can fit in with the space you have as well as your lifestyle

If you have children or other pets choose a happy-go-lucky breed to make things easier.

I have only touched on the most important things you need to keep in mind when choosing a dog. It is not nearly enough information to make the correct choice on. To prevent serious problems down the line, get yourself a good dog training e-book such as SitStayFetch and make sure you get the dog that is just right for you.

So what is the SitStayFetch Book?

That is a question you may well ask.
The SitStayFetch book is a detailed and thorough look at how you can prevent, as well as, deal with common behavior problems often exhibited by dogs. I am the owner of a moderately troublesome dog myself and I have spent a lot of time searching for reliable information on dog training. I have to say that I am very impressed with level and depth of the information contained in SitStayFetch.

I am also very impressed with the fact that the information is actually reliable. So of ten information you get from the internet are inaccurate or at least incomplete. The information contained in SitStayFetch is accurate and reliable. This e-book has been written by a knowledgeable dog trainer so you can relax and know that it is a good e-book. You can be assured that the knowledge and all the tips and advice included are tried and true, and come from Stevens’ real-life experiences as a professional dog trainer.

What Are All The Aspects Covered By this e-book?

Obviously behavior problems are covered extensively.

There is also advice on choosing a puppy.

Some advice on dog breeds.

The best place to get a puppy.

Puppy and dog proofing your house.

Your first visits to the vet.

Housetraining

Aggression

Dominance

Destructive chewing

Digging

Excessive barking

Separation anxiety

Intermediate level obedience commands

Health related problems

Advanced commands and tricks

Here Are Some Particularly Good Parts:
In addition to the contents listed above, there’s also a pretty impressive section on dog whispering, which – in case you haven’t heard of it already – is a method of dog training based on a philosophy of clear communication and mutual respect. It’s been popularized in recent years by Cesar Millan (“The Dog Whisperer”), and is becoming increasingly well-known as an alternative and humane method for disciplining and training your dog. SitStayFetch has dedicated an entire section to dog whispering. Daniel Stevens explains the background of the technique, how to utilize voice and body language to your best advantage, and how to use the technique to calmly, assertively, and effectively correct and train your dog. Step-by-set instructions are included for the common commands (sit, down, come, stay, quiet, etc).

There are also some freebies:
There’s just something about getting something for nothing. And, although my magpie-like acquisitiveness may have led me into less-than-productive purchases in the past, in this particular case I’m happy to report that SitStayFetch hasn’t let me down: the freebies included with this book are not only numerous, they’re actually useful(wow!)

The book itself costs $37. For this price, you get a complete and detailed manual on training your dog, preventing and handling behavioral problems, and a whole bunch of general-knowledge tips and advice.

You also get a handful of practical freebies: four bonus books, dealing respectively with advanced housetraining how-to’s and troubleshooting (including both the crate- and paper-training methods); a detailed study on resolving canine aggression; how to effectively groom your dog (including information on coat care for specific breeds, dental care, and nail-clipping how-to’s); and finally, how to begin training your dog for security work.

Another particularly useful freebie: a personalized consultation with a member of the Kingdom of Pets team. If you’ve got an issue with your dog that you’d like some individual attention on, you can flick them a quick email and receive a personalized, thorough reply packed with expert advice and practical tips.

SitStayFetch: A Thumbnail Sketch
Altogether, I’m pretty impressed with this package. I’ve owned dogs on and off my whole life, starting from when I was ten – I would have thought that I was better-prepared than most to handle the quirks and caprices of my canine friends.

But since reading this book, I think my pre-SitStayFetch self was (embarrassingly) perhaps a trifle more complacent than knowledgeable – I’ve learned more since reading this manual than I’ve picked up in a near-lifetime’s worth of contact with dogs (do you know how to stop your dog from tugging on the leash, without using a check-chain? Well, I do – but until I got my hands on a copy of this book, I certainly didn’t!)

Several of the training techniques present a refreshingly common-sense, down-to-earth approach to dog training; others require a little more effort (take dog whispering as an example) but yield some pretty dramatic results. I liked the way that more than one training technique is detailed, to allow the reader to pick and choose the techniques that best suit themselves and their individual dogs.

I have no doubts in recommending the SitStayFetch book. Check it out; I’m convinced you’ll love it.

You may be wondering what an article on dog breeds has to do with dog training help. Well, dog training starts even before you have your dog. Choosing the right dog for you and your family is the first step in dog training. No amount of dog training help is going to help you change a dog that is just completely wrong for you. You need to know the characteristics of the different breeds in order to choose a suitable breed for your circumstances. In a later article I will take a look at “lifestyle” that obviously forms part of this whole issue.

Basically dogs can be divided into seven groups:

* Sporting group
* Hound group
* Working group
* Herding group
* Non-sporting group
* Terrier group
* Toy group

1. The Sporting Group:

These dogs were bred to help with hunting fowl. They are excellent companions and will fetch whatever you want them to. You get four types in this group:

a. Pointers
b. Retrievers
c. Spaniels
d. setters

2. The Hound Group:

Your hound dogs like following fast-moving game and this has made them a favorite in hunting circles. They are easy going and at times stoic and they make very good family pets. You get three types in this group:

a. Sight hounds
b. Scent hounds
c. Large game hounds

3. The Working Group:

The classification of this group is self explanatory. You get four types in this group:

a. Sled/Draft dogs
b. Personal protection dogs
c. Rescue dogs
d. Estate guarding dogs

4. The Herding Group:

These dogs were bread to herd livestock. They are hard working dogs that like to work under direction. There are two types in this group:

a. Sheep herders
b. Cattle herders

5. The Terrier group:

Terriers are very determined animals and they do not know about losing. There are two types of terriers:

a. Vermin hunters
b. Fighting breeds

6. The Non-Sporting Group:

Most of these dogs were bred for specific work, but, as dogs do not work much in modern times they’ve become good companions. As they were originally bred for specific tasks their personalities can vary a lot. Consulting breed-specific books are essential before getting one of these dogs.

7. The Toy Group:

These dogs are mainly miniature versions of working or hunting dogs. They need little exercise (though they do need exercise) and lots of loving attention. It is essential that you train these little darlings as they can really take over the household.

Mixed breeds do not have to be ignored. They can make very good pets. The only problem with mixed breeds is that you cannot predict their personality. If you can get background information on the puppy’s origins you will be better able to predict his nature. Like all dogs, mixed breeds need a lot of attention and good, loving training.
